"MISSOURI BREAKS" - MONTANA

Location: situated northeast of Billings, south of the Missouri River and the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge.  

History: Based on an old ranch homesteaded by our host's grandparents in 1914, close to another outlaw camp called Lost Cabin, hidden deep in the untrammeled wilderness. Found at the mouth of a box canyon and utilized by Kid Curry it was perfect to corral stolen horses. Rides along Blue Ridge to Square Butte and Moonshine Cabin before looping back to main camp - useful to access the Lewis & Clark and Nez Perce historic trails too.

Ride: The Missouri Breaks is scenic isolated country - a tricky series of steep cuts, ridges, rocky outcrops and timbered coulees. Elevations rise from 1,800 - 4,000 feet. Trail-heading into the Charles M. Russell Refuge (CMR) a magnificent wilderness region comprising of 1.1 million acres surrounding Fort Peck Lake - home to Montana's only prairie elk herd, plus mule deer, red fox and a great diversity of birds. Follow remote trails of Kid Curry to find historic places (Rocky Point), a river crossing township patronized by many colorful characters of the West. The outlaws forded here to access Hideaway Coulee and the mining town of Landusky. Beyond is the Little Rockies Mountains where Butch Cassidy also came to hide out. This itinerary has added flexibility to spend extra time in the refuge exploring other trails.
