"LITTLE ROCKIES GREAT ESCAPE". MONTANA

Location: Situated northeast of Lewistown, south of Malta, near the Little Rockies Mountains and the Charles M. Russell Refuge.

History: Homesteaded by Kid Curry and his three brothers around 1885/6 this was the most northerly way station used by the Wild Bunch on the Outlaw Trail. Today little has changed in the virtually unknown and remote north-eastern part of Montana, a state aptly known as the 'Big Sky Country'.

Ride: Open range and rolling hills merge into the Missouri Breaks, Montana's 'Bad Lands' - a series of steep cuts, ridges, rocky outcrops and timbered coulees. Elevations rise from 2,200-5,700 feet. RV at the Hay Camp, passing Indian Springs to the ghost town of Landusky. Nearby is the Rock Creek Horse ranch once owned by Kid Curry and his brothers. A circuitous trail takes in the Thornhill Ranch and Hideaway Coulee (where old cabin foundations and stone chimney stack remain of the outlaws HQ). Lost in the stunning Breaks where the outlaws eluded posses, you'll visit the Horse Trap, before enduring a tough ride along Bull Creek to conclude at Zortman.
